Summary: Kirk learns that his same-sex bonding makes him unequal in
rights and dignity to other men.
Good call.
I feel like a second-class citizen. On the other hand, I had pizza for
dinner, so it can't be all bad.

Title: Gays Want Special Rights?
Author: Hypatia Kosh

Series: TOS
Codes: K/S, drabble
Rating: PG, for criticizing the role of organized religion in
politics.
Part: 1/1
Summary: Kirk learns that his same-sex bonding makes him unequal in
rights and dignity to other men.
Interesting, Hy. I would dearly hope that by the 23rd century,
same-sex marriages would be legal and accepted, period. But the
premise you put forth here is scarily plausible. I can't help
wondering what it was that happened 40 years before the time of this
drabble to turn back the clock suddenly on this (assuming things were
different before then). Nice political commentary.

Gays Want Special Rights?
Kirk paused over the marital status question on his Terran tax form.
By all rights his answer should have been different this year--but
Earth had not recognized same-sex marriages in over forty years. An
unholy alliance of Christian and Muslim groups had successfully
pushed through an amendment to the U.N.E. constitution limiting
marriage to one man and one woman, or one man and up to three women
in localities where polygyny had traditionally been practiced.
Vulcan recognized any bonding, however. Kirk snooped in Spock's files
hoping for some vindication, but Vulcan tax law does not refer to
marital status.

Thanks for the feedback, Gamin. I'm glad you appreciate what I was
going for.

I tend to see history as cyclic. The best I can tell (and I admit I
only know a little) is that there are powerful forces which come into
play during some situations--like wartime, for example--which can
drastically affect the status of gays in society. (The same can be
said for women, or ethnic minority groups, and so on.)

I'd prefer to think that it wouldn't be so, but I could see Earth
society getting reactionary on social issues if they had some fear
that they were being "polluted" with "alien values", or if there were
just enough people who thought that humans needed to breed like crazy
(and thought gays were in the way--as if gays never have children and
never rear children; nonsense, of course).

It may help that I know some of your personal background now, but
yes, I think I "got" it.

Hmm, I hadn't thought of that aspect--specific situations
affecting changes in the way things like sexual orientation are
viewed. I can definitely see the cyclic part.

I've read enough fic written by people who obviously didn't buy
GR's idea of humans being "completely free of prejudice" that I find
this plausible. (Also makes for great story drama if you don't overdo
it.) I wonder if population is an issue in the 23rd century--no
mention anywhere of any type of birth control being necessary, so
apparently either it's completely okay socially and morally to go
around having sex with people and producing children right and left
with no regard for ramifications or consequences (don't start me), or
else that WWIII and Eugenics Wars that was mentioned really depleted
their population. (Just wondering...)

It's been longer than that for me--in fact, it's so long between
readings that I keep being afraid Google will destroy my account info.
<g> Had to come back here and ask a question, though, and thought I
may as well see if there were any responses to my earlier posts. The
main reason I don't bother to post here any more is I think there are
just too many people posting as it is and I think most of my posts get
lost in the shuffle and ignored.
